These disorders refer to the abnormal patterns of muscle function and movement in the face, mouth, & tongue, affecting breathing, chewing, swallowing, sucking, and speaking.
OMD’s interfere with proper growth & development, occlusion, TMJ movement, and the stability of dental & orthodontic treatment. They can also contribute to forward head posture, incorrect oral habits, & more.
Myofunctional Therapy is an individualized exercise based treatment designed to restore proper breathing and oral functions of the tongue, mouth, & facial muscles.
This is achieved through neuromuscular re-education and by establishing strength, coordination, & mobility in the facial & tongue muscles.
At MYO Mindfulness, we believe in a holistic/functional approach to health & wellness. Multidisciplinary Provider Support is vital to comprehensive care & breath is LIFE!

Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome or UARS is a sleep disordered breathing condition similar to obstructive sleep apnea. The muscles & tissues of the upper airway relax at night (often occurring in combination with an already narrowed airway). This resistance through the airway is significant enough to disrupt the quality of sleep causing arousals. Most events are shallow & brief enough that sufferers are typically unaware of these awakenings during the night. Sleep quality is generally disrupted to the point of causing clinical consequences such as difficulty falling or staying asleep, excessive daytime sleepiness or a sense of overall fatigue.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and then starts again during sleep. It is caused by collapse and blockage of the upper airway. Over time this condition can cause serious complications, such has increased risk of heart disease, heart attack & stroke, .

TMJ disorder or TMD involves problems with the jaw and the muscles that control jaw movement. These problems can result in pain in your jaw joint as well as difficulty or discomfort when biting, chewing, speaking, or yawning. Myofunctional therapy focuses on correcting poor oral habits that contribute to jaw pain. We can achieve optimal function of your tongue and facial muscles by strengthening & training them in order to reduce your TMJ pain. Also reducing tension in your face and jaw, while reducing clenching, grinding, and headaches .
Mouth breathing is when you breathe primarily through the mouth. This can be caused by an obstruction in the nasal passages. It can also be caused by an obstruction in the throat, such as enlarged tonsils, adenoids, &/or tongue muscles. The way we breathe can impact the way our face grows, as well as our quality of sleep!

Getting to the root cause of why braces are needed in the first place!
Braces and appliances work by applying constant light pressure to the teeth & surrounding bones. Our facial & tongue muscles do the same! If the muscles of the face, tongue, & lips are functioning improperly then our teeth shift to follow that force. Having these muscles in balance and working properly, guides proper jaw growth, allowing enough space for the teeth to grow in.
